Latino Victory Fund Endorses Antoinette Sedillo López for New Mexico’s First Congressional District Democratic Nomination

Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory Fund tonight announced the endorsement of State Senator Antoinette Sedillo López for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in the runoff for the Democratic nomination after Secretary Deb Haaland vacated the seat earlier this month.

Statement from Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Nathalie Rayes:
“Antoinette is an experienced community leader who has demonstrated a staunch commitment to advancing issues supported by New Mexicans in NM-01. As a proud longtime New Mexican, Antoinette understands the unique challenges facing New Mexico. She’ll be a resolute voice in Congress that will help advance progressive issues, including access to quality, affordable health care, higher education opportunities, gun control reform, and indigenous rights. Electing Antoinette to New Mexico’s 1st will ensure that the majority-Hispanic district reflects its community’s population and that New Mexico’s congressional delegation continues to reflect the state’s diversity. We congratulate her on making the runoff election and are proud to support her candidacy for the Democratic nomination.”

With more than 50 percent of the population identifying as Hispanic, the Democratic nominee for NM-01 should reflect the population that the candidate will serve. In 2018, Latino Victory proudly endorsed Sedillo López in the Democratic primary for NM-01, along with a coalition of progressive organizations.

In the Tuesday election, Sedillo López received 37.2 percent of the vote from the State Central Committee for NM-01, while her closest competitor, State Rep. Melanie Stansbury, received 21.6 percent of the votes. Sedillo and Stansbury are now headed to a runoff election that will commence tomorrow Wednesday, March 31, at 7 a.m. local time. The winner will go to a general election against GOP nominee Sen. Mark Moores on June 1st.
