Washington, D.C. — As the Giffords and March For Our Lives’ 2020 Gun Safety Forum takes place today in Las Vegas, Latino Victory and Giffords released an in-depth research project last week that looks into how Texas Latino voters felt after the nation’s largest domestic terrorist attack against Latinos.
Here are some of the key findings from the in-depth research project:

81% of the respondents expressed concern at the threat of gun violence, driven by racism.

82% of respondents reported holding President Trump partly responsible for the increase in anti-immigrant, anti-Latino language.

80% of respondents agreed that stricter gun laws are necessary. More than half of respondents stated that they felt gun laws should be significantly stricter.

80% of respondents said they felt personally affected by the shooting in El Paso with an even greater percentage (83%) expressing concern that other Latino communities might be targeted in similar attacks.

A majority of Texas Latinos are concerned about gun violence driven by racism, feel stricter gun laws are necessary and are paying close attention to the 2020 elections, according to a poll released Friday. The poll, conducted by the polling firms AudienceNet and Latino Decisions on behalf of the gun violence prevention organization Giffords and Latino Victory Project, found 8-in-10 Latinos in the state agree that stricter gun laws are necessary, 81 percent are concerned about gun violence driven by racism and 82 percent hold President Donald Trump at least partly responsible for the increase in anti-immigrant and anti-Latino language.

Eighty-one percent of Latino voters in Texas are concerned about racism-motivated gun violence and that the Latino community might be targeted again in attacks similar to the mass shooting in El Paso, according to a survey sponsored by the gun control group Giffords and the progressive group Latino Victory Project. KRLD Radio: Poll Shows Texas Latino Population Fears Being Victimized by Racially Motivated Attack
The August third mass shooting in El Paso, in which the 22 Hispanics were murdered, loomed large in the poll. The poll, conducted by the gun control group Giffords and the political organization Latino Victory project, says 81 percent of the respondent are afraid of being shot because they are Hispanic. Latino Victory executive director Mayra Macias says “they’re scared that another incident that is driven by hate is likely to happen. For the first time, I would say as a collective, we feel this weight of a target on our backs.” The statewide poll surveyed more than a thousand Texas Latino voters, both Republicans and Democrats. Macias says “Frankly we did not expect to see that type of response. 82 percent of respondents reported holding President Trump partly responsible for the increase in anti-immigrant and anti-Latino language.”
