Yesterday, Latino Victory Foundation, the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), UFCW, Unite Here and others convened at the White House for a discussion on the Barriers to Naturalization for Hard to Reach Populations.
“There are 8.8 million Legal Permanent Residents in the United States who could become citizens today. Even though they are eligible to apply for citizenship, many of them don’t know how to do so, are scared, or don’t have the resources – financial or other – to apply,” said Helga Flores Trejo, National Committee Member for Latino Victory Foundation. She added, “Latino Victory Foundation is proud to partner with the White House, NPNA and a broad group of organizations to empower our community, break down the barriers to citizenship and help people become fully participating members of our nation and our democracy. America is stronger when more people are engaged citizens, with a vote and a voice.”
Josh Hoyt, Executive Director of National Partnership for New Americans said, “We extend our deepest thanks the White House and to all of our partners focused on naturalization of the hardest to reach populations. At NPNA, we firmly believe that U.S. citizenship should not be a privilege limited to the wealthy and highly educated. Yesterday, we forged important relationships, focused on our goals for the next six months, and reaffirmed our commitment to supporting nearly 9 million eligible green card holders to naturalize. A truly powerful day!”
“We were pleased to host the National Partnership for New Americans and regional leaders from across the country to discuss effective strategies for reaching out to immigrants and legal permanent residents that are eligible to become citizens. Through the launch of the “Stand Stronger” Citizenship Campaign, the White House is committed to championing citizenship and engaging with experts in communities through organizations like NPNA.” – Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Public Engagement at the White House.
