Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Senate voted to confirm Xavier Becerra as secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, making him the first Latino to serve in this position. Latino Victory Fund celebrates the groundbreaking confirmation of Xavier Becerra to lead the department that oversees health insurance programs covering more than 130 million Americans and manages the largest budget in the federal government. Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund president & CEO, issued the following statement:
“Secretary Becerra’s confirmation is historic, and it has toppled another representation barrier for Latinos. As the Biden-Harris administration continues implementing its Covid-19 pandemic recovery strategy, having a leader like Secretary Becerra on board is crucial for a successful, well-rounded, and inclusive recovery. Secretary Becerra has the intersectional experience that is optimal for transforming our country’s health care access, including addressing systemic racism and economic disparities in the healthcare system. He’s a longtime health care access advocate, an experienced public official and policy expert, and a fighter for civil rights and underserved communities. Latino Victory is proud to have supported Secretary Becerra’s nomination, and we congratulate him on his well-deserved achievement.”
Latino Victory Fund supported Secretary Becerra’s nomination and conducted an aggressive public campaign to call on the Latino community, leaders, advocacy groups, and progressive allies to call Senators and urge them to confirm Becerra. Latino Victory Fund believes Secretary Becerra will lead our nation out of this pandemic, put the Latino communities’ health and livelihood at the forefront and implement policies that will help improve health care access and outcomes of the Latino community.
