Washington, D.C.—Today, the U.S. Supreme Court granted cert to hear an appeal on the President’s executive action on DAPA and the extension of DACA, a victory for millions of DREAMers and immigrants who will now have their day in court.
The U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit Court had initially ruled to block President Obama’s immigration executive action and in doing so, thwarted the DAPA and extended DACA application process that would allow deferred action for DREAMers, and the immigrant parents of U.S. citizen children and Legal Permanent Residents.
Cristóbal Alex, Latino Victory Fund president, issued the following statement:
“Today’s victory is a milestone in our fight for the rights of millions of families who will finally get their day in court. We commend the Supreme Court for taking this case and call on them to do the right thing, restore the rule of law and unfreeze DAPA and the expansion of DACA – it will benefit our economy and bring peace and stability to the homes of millions of hard-working mixed status families.
“The President’s executive actions establish priorities for enforcement regarding our immigration laws. Frivolous, political lawsuits cannot stand in the way of government workings. This lawsuit was nothing but a political stunt – the Republican led states challenging DACA and DAPA hand-picked an activist judge and conservative appeals court that delivered the decision they wanted and blocked implementation of these programs – essentially using our courts for purely political gain. The Supreme Court must act and restore dignity to our judiciary system.”
