Latino Victory Fund Chairman Luis A. Miranda, Jr. and Congressman Adriano Espaillat Help Rally Voters for Tony Vargas in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District

Latino Victory Fund, a Prominent National Organization Mobilizing Latino Voters to Shape the Future of Congress and the White House, while Electing the Next Generation of Latino Leaders, also announced its endorsement of Dunixi Guereca for Nebraska Legislative District 7.

Washington, D.C., October 15, 2024 – Latino Victory Fund is proud to announce its involvement in rallying voters this past weekend in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District to support the Harris/Walz ticket and Tony Vargas, who could become the first Latino to represent Nebraska in Congress.

“As Nebraskans begin casting their ballots through vote by mail and early voting, we have the opportunity to shape the future of not just Nebraska, but of the nation,” said Latino Victory Fund Chairman, Luis A. Miranda, Jr. “Tony Vargas is a proven leader who will represent Nebraska with integrity, and a commitment to ensuring every family has the opportunity to thrive.”

The race for NE-02 is one of the most competitive in the nation, with the Cook Political Report rating the district as a “Toss-up.” A win for Tony Vargas could help flip the House for Democrats and secure essential Latino representation in Congress. This district also holds national significance, as Nebraska awards its electoral college votes by district, giving NE-02 the power to influence the presidential election outcome—just as it did in 2020 when President Biden won its electoral vote.

Chairman Miranda was joined in Omaha by Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), and Latino Victory Fund Executive Director Katharine Pichardo-Erskine.  The group joined local leaders on Sunday at a debate watch party to energize voters and highlight the importance of participation in this critical election. They then hosted a Monday morning “cafecito” to kick off a volunteer phone bank and canvassing operation that will continue on through election day.

“Our community has the power to decide the future of both Congress and the White House,” said Congressman Adriano Espaillat. “Latino and Latina voters in Nebraska must show up to the polls and vote for leaders like Tony Vargas, who understand our needs and will fight for working families.”

Dunixi Guereca, the son of Mexican immigrants and a dedicated advocate for public education and working families, who is now running to replace Vargas in Nebraska Legislative District 7, also participated in the activities where he was officially endorsed by Latino Victory.

“Dunixi Guereca represents the leadership that Nebraska needs,” said Luis A. Miranda, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Latino Victory Fund. “His dedication to public education, workers’ rights, and economic fairness is unwavering, and he will be a strong voice for the Latino community and all Nebraskans in the state legislature.”

“This election is about delivering real solutions for the challenges Nebraskans face every day—from the rising cost of living to access to healthcare and community safety,” said Tony Vargas. “I believe in a future where everyone has access to good paying jobs, safe housing, and good healthcare. That means standing up for reproductive freedom, fixing our broken immigration system, and protecting our democracy. We need leaders committed to building a stronger, more inclusive future, and I am grateful for Latino Victory Fund’s partnership as we work to make that vision a reality.”

For his part, Dunixi Guereca said: “I’m running to ensure that every family in District 7 has access to strong public schools, fair wages, and the opportunity to build a better future. I’m honored to have the support of Latino Victory Fund, and I’m ready to fight for all Nebraskans in our state legislature.”

Katharine Pichardo-Erskine, Executive Director of Latino Victory Fund, offered the Latina perspective by highlighting that “Every election is a chance to make our voices heard. This one is about reproductive freedom, economic opportunity, climate change, and ensuring we all have a fair shot. Nebraska’s Latino and Latina voters have the power to decide the outcome, and we must make sure we vote like our future depends on it—because it does. This is why Latino Victory Fund is committed to mobilizing voters across battleground districts and ensuring leaders like Tony Vargas and Dunixi Guereca have the support they need to make history and build a better future for Nebraska and the nation.”

The Latino Victory Fund is a progressive political action committee that aims to grow Latino political power by increasing Latino representation at every level of government—from the county board to the Senate to the White House.
