Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory Fund congratulated Elizabeth Guzman, candidate for Virginia House of Delegates, District 31; Alfonso Lopez, candidate for Virginia House of Delegates District 49; and Canek Aguirre, candidate for Alexandria City Council District, for winning their races in the Virginia Democratic primary election.

Statement on Elizabeth Guzman by Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:
“We congratulate Delegate Guzman for her well-deserved victory. She’s a proven legislator and an unwavering advocate for working families, people of color, and immigrants in Richmond. Since becoming one of the first Latinas elected to the Virginia House in 2017, Delegate Guzman has shown just how critical it is to have Latino representation that mirrors Virginia’s population. She has worked tirelessly on issues that impact her constituents and the Latino community, including health care access, immigrant rights, the environment, and workers’ rights. We look forward to working with Delegate Guzman to ensure she wins big in November.”

Statement on Alfonso Lopez by Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:
“Delegate Lopez is an experienced legislator who has fought for his constituents since he became the first Latino Democrat elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He has strived to make his district and the Commonwealth a better place by fighting for progressive issues, including access to affordable housing, criminal justice reform, and equity for immigrant and new American communities. In addition to breaking a representation barrier for Latinos, Delegate Lopez created the first Latino Caucus, a much-needed space for Latino collaboration in the Virginia General Assembly. We congratulate Delegate Lopez and look forward to continuing to see him move Virginia forward.”

Statement on Canek Aguirre by Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:
“We are proud to congratulate Councilman Aguirre on his primary election victory. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the Alexandria community. With a surging Latino population, his presence in the Alexandria City Council is a valuable component to creating a government that reflects its diverse commuting and burgeoning Latino population. As a city council member, he’s committed to working for an equitable Covid-19 recovery for Alexandrians, increasing housing opportunities, investing in public schools and infrastructure, and eliminating health disparities. Canek has a bold vision for Alexandria, and we are proud to support his candidacy.”
