Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory congratulates Mayor Michelle De La Isla for winning the primary race for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District. De La Isla is a Latino Victory ‘First Latina’ candidate, and if elected in November, she will be the first Latina elected to represent Kansas in Congress. She has already made history by becoming the first Latina elected mayor of Topeka, Kansas, in 2017.

Meet Michelle De La Isla
Michelle De La Isla is the Democratic candidate for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District. She is currently the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas. She previously served on the Topeka City Council from 2013-2018, and is the city’s first Latina, first unmarried, and the second female to serve as mayor. Born of humble beginnings in New York City, De La Isla faced many challenges at a young age. Early in life, her mother fled for safety and took De La Isla and her brother to Puerto Rico to live with her grandparents.
