Latino Victory Fund Congratulates Ricky Hurtado on Winning 63rd House District Race

Hurtado is the first Democratic Latino elected to the North Carolina General Assembly, and the first Latino elected to represent the 63rd House District.

Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory Fund congratulates Ricky Hurtado for winning the race to represent North Carolina’s 63rd House District, becoming the first Democratic Latino elected in the North Carolina General Assembly. Hurtado also flipped the 63rd District from Republican to Democrat.

“Ricky is a rising Latino leader who has run a formidable campaign not only to win his historic election but to empower North Carolina’s Latinos to make their voices heard,” said Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund president & CEO. “Not only is Ricky supporting the issues that impact the Latino community, such as health care access, education, and support for working families, but he’s also building a pipeline of young Latino leaders by expanding opportunities for first-generation and immigrant college students. We can’t wait to see the strides he takes in the North Carolina House for his constituents and for the Latino community.”

Meet Ricky Hurtado

A son of working-class immigrants, Ricky grew up in rural North Carolina and is a product of public schools. A first-generation college student, Ricky’s dream finally came true when he was accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain Scholar. He found his passion for public service while at UNC, mentoring other high school students who grew up in similar circumstances and were working hard to make their own dreams come true. These experiences set him on a path to eventually attend graduate school at Princeton University, focusing on how to create and implement effective public policy in order to fight poverty and inequality and build strong, vibrant communities. After a brief time as a consultant and policy analyst supporting nonprofits and foundations across the country, Ricky became an Adjunct Instructor at the UNC School of Education and the Co-Executive Director of an education initiative supporting first-generation college students and immigrant families as they break down barriers to educational opportunity.
