A Champion for Public Education, Working Families, and Economic Fairness
Washington, DC, October 15, 2024 – Latino Victory Fund proudly announces its endorsement of Dunixi Guereca for Nebraska’s Legislative District 7. As the son of Mexican immigrants and a dedicated advocate for public education and working families, Guereca is committed to creating equitable opportunities for the people of Nebraska.
“Dunixi Guereca represents the leadership that Nebraska needs,” said Sindy M. Benavides, President and CEO of Latino Victory Fund. “His dedication to public education, workers’ rights, and economic fairness is unwavering, and he will be a strong voice for the Latino community and all Nebraskans in the state legislature.”
Meet the Candidate: A True Advocate for Nebraska’s Working Families
Born and raised in a working-class family, Dunixi Guereca is deeply connected to the values of hard work and community service. His parents, who immigrated from Mexico, instilled in him the importance of education and giving back. Today, Guereca serves as the Executive Director of Stand for Schools, a Nebraska nonprofit committed to strengthening public education. Prior to this role, he was a union organizer with SEIU, advocating for healthcare workers to receive fair wages and protections, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m running to ensure that every family in District 7 has access to strong public schools, fair wages, and the opportunity to build a better future,” said Guereca. “I’m honored to have the support of Latino Victory Fund, and I’m ready to fight for all Nebraskans in our state legislature.”
Why This Endorsement Matters
Dunixi Guereca’s candidacy reflects a new wave of leadership committed to addressing the challenges facing Nebraska’s working families. His top priorities include creating a fair tax system that lessens the burden on everyday Nebraskans, securing more state funding for public schools, and making Nebraska more affordable for all residents.
Guereca’s strong advocacy background, combined with his deep roots in the community, positions him as a champion for the people. His endorsement by Latino Victory Fund signals the growing importance of Latino representation in Nebraska’s political landscape, particularly in a district where more than half of the population – almost 52% – identifies as Hispanic.
About the District and Race
Nebraska Legislative District 7, located in eastern Nebraska, covers parts of Omaha, the state’s largest city. This urban district features a diverse population with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. The district is currently represented by State Senator Tony Vargas, who is temporarily termed out and is now seeking to unseat Republican Congressman Don Bacon. Vargas, a key figure in Nebraska politics, has publicly endorsed Guereca as his successor.
The race for District 7 is highly competitive, and Guereca’s candidacy provides a powerful opportunity to continue the district’s legacy of Democratic leadership. Vargas won his last two elections with significant margins, and Guereca aims to build on that momentum.
“This election is about ensuring that Nebraska’s working families have a voice in our government,” Guereca said. “It’s time to fight for a fair tax system, well-funded public schools, and an economy that works for all of us.”
