WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Latino Victory Fund endorsed Fernando Treviño and Adrian Rivera-Reyes for the two open at-large seats for the Philadelphia City Council.
Latino Victory Fund Interim President Melissa Mark-Viverito issued the following statement on Fernando Treviño’s endorsement:
“Fernando Treviño is the embodiment of the American Dream. As an immigrant from Mexico, he has worked hard to build a family and career in the United States. Latino Victory Fund is proud to endorse Fernando Treviño for the Philadelphia City Council because we know that he will fight for everyday Philadelphians. From his days organizing for President Obama in Philadelphia to his work establishing the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant and Multicultural Affairs, he knows and understands the needs of his community. His voice and vast experience are exactly what the City of Brotherly Love needs right now.”
Latino Victory Fund Interim President Melissa Mark-Viverito issued the following statement on Adrian Rivera-Reyes’ endorsement:
“From growing up in a working-class family in Puerto Rico to becoming a Ph.D. cancer researcher, Adrian Rivera-Reyes’ perspective and voice are what’s missing in the Philadelphia City Council. Adrian’s passion for helping Philadelphia’s working families is nothing new. As a community organizer, he has seen firsthand what struggling families are going through. He will be the strongest advocate at City Hall, fighting for quality housing, education, and health care. Make no mistake: this PhillyRican can get things done.”
If either candidate is elected, it would mark the first time there are two Latinos serving simultaneously on the Philadelphia City Council.
Both races have historic implications. If Treviño wins, he would become the first Mexican immigrant elected to the Philadelphia City Council. If Rivera-Reyes wins, he would be the first openly gay Latino elected to the Philadelphia City Council.
