Latino Victory Fund Endorses Rochelle Garza for Attorney General and Lorenzo Sanchez for State House in Newly Drawn District 70

Rochelle Garza would be the first Latina attorney general in Texas.

Washington, D.C. — Latino Victory Fund announced the endorsement of Rochelle Garza, candidate for Texas attorney general, and Lorenzo Sanchez, candidate for State House District 70.

If elected, Garza would be the first Latina attorney general in Texas. A new poll conducted by Univision and Media Predict shows that Garza has a clear lead with Latino voters in Texas, with 20 percent of Hispanic respondents saying they would vote for her.  In addition, she is at the top in a virtual tie with non-Hispanic respondents.

Statement on Rochelle Garza by Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:

“Rochelle Garza has been an effective, steadfast advocate for Texas’ working and immigrant families and has fought for civil rights to help create a Texas government that serves the people. As an attorney general, she will defend Texans from attacks on civil and human rights by advocating for health care access, fighting oppressive voter laws that restrict access to the ballot for the Latino community, and protecting reproductive rights for Texans. Rochelle has fought injustice and won, and coupled with her unflinching dedication to equity and inclusion in Texas laws, she’s poised to become a formidable voice for Texans. Latino Victory is proud to endorse Rochelle Garza in her historic bid for Texas attorney general.”

Statement on Lorenzo Sanchez by Nathalie Rayes, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:

“We are proud to endorse Lorenzo Sanchez for Texas House District 70. Lorenzo’s part of the generation of young Tejanos who are breaking glass ceilings and ensuring that the state moves towards progress, social justice, and equality for all. The time has come for new generations to carve an inclusive, prosperous  Texas.  Lorenzo will speak up for the issues that matter to Latinos and Texans, including access to health care, policies to harbor economic prosperity, improving energy and infrastructure, and expanding access to quality, affordable education.”

Meet Rochelle Garza

  • Garza is a former ACLU attorney. As a lawyer, she has spent her career fighting for the civil rights of children, immigrants, and working families. She took on Donald Trump, Ken Paxton, and Brett Kavanaugh when they tried to prevent an immigrant teen, Jane Doe, from exercising her right to choose— and won.
  • Her work on that case resulted in the “Garza Notice,” which requires the federal government to notify immigrant teens detained across the country of their right to abortion free of retaliation and obstruction.
  • She fought against Donald Trump’s devastating “zero tolerance” family separation immigration policies, denial of access to the ports of entry for asylum-seeking families and individuals, and restriction of reproductive rights for unaccompanied minors.
  • Garza is a lifelong border resident and fighter for the Rio Grande Valley’s border communities. She was raised in Brownsville, Texas, the sister city to Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
  • She is the daughter of two public school teachers. Garza’s mother was raised by a World War II veteran and a hard-working mother who became the manager of a municipal credit union after raising three children. Garza’s father was raised on a farm by an immigrant mother and a father whose family had worked the land for multiple generations

Meet Lorenzo Sanchez

  • Sanchez is a small business owner, a first-generation Mexican American, raised by a single mother and educated in public schools in the district.
  • He was the 2020 Democratic Nominee for Texas State Representative of House District 67, covering much of the same areas as the new House District 70 and the community where he grew up.
  • In 2020, Lorenzo proved his leadership by inspiring hundreds of volunteers to get involved in local politics for the first time.
  • Since 2020, Sanchez has been leading on issues facing the community. He has engaged voters, community leaders, medical professionals, teachers, and business owners across Collin County and Texas.
