A Proven Leader Focused on Environmental Protections, Housing, and Economic Opportunities

Washington, DC, October 15, 2024—Latino Victory Fund proudly announces its endorsement of Ross Romero for Salt Lake County Council, District 4, in Utah. Romero, a former Utah State Senator and House Member, brings decades of experience in public service, banking, and law to his campaign. If elected, he would be the first Latino to serve on the Salt Lake County Council.

“Ross Romero is the embodiment of dedication and leadership,” said Sindy M. Benavides, President and CEO of Latino Victory Fund. “His deep understanding of local government and his commitment to environmental sustainability, affordable housing, and economic equity makes him an ideal candidate to serve Salt Lake County. We proudly endorse his campaign and believe he will be an outstanding advocate for his community.”

Meet the Candidate: A Lifetime of Public Service and Advocacy

Ross Romero has a long and distinguished career in public service. He served in the Utah State Senate and House of Representatives from 2005 to 2012, retiring as the Senate Democratic Leader. Romero has tirelessly advocated for environmental protections, affordable housing, and equitable economic opportunities throughout his career. His leadership has been shaped by his experience in law, finance, and government relations. Romero has worked as a litigator and partner at the Salt Lake City law firm Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & McDonough and in banking with Zions Bank, where he worked with local governments on financing public initiatives.

In 2020, Romero founded Inclusion Strategies, a consulting firm focused on government relations, diversity, and inclusion. His experience has earned him respect and recognition locally and nationally, and he has served on the boards of the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials (NALEO), the Utah Hospital Association, and the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity (IFDHE). President Obama appointed him to serve on the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.

“I’m running to bring my experience and passion for public service to Salt Lake County’s District 4,” said Romero. “It’s time to ensure our communities are protected, that everyone has access to affordable housing, and that we create economic opportunities that work for all. I am proud to have the endorsement of the Latino Victory Fund and excited to continue working for the people of Salt Lake County.”

Why This Endorsement Matters

Ross Romero’s candidacy offers a unique opportunity for Salt Lake County to elect a leader who combines both legislative experience and a deep commitment to sustainability, community well-being, and economic growth. As the first Latino candidate for Salt Lake County Council, Romero is a trailblazer who will work to protect the environment, address homelessness, and create more affordable housing options. He will also focus on expanding economic and workforce opportunities for diverse communities, ensuring that Salt Lake County remains a welcoming and thriving place for all residents.
Romero’s top priorities include increasing environmental protections, addressing the county’s homelessness crisis through sustainable housing solutions, and ensuring that economic development is inclusive and benefits all communities. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping Salt Lake County’s future and ensuring that it remains a place where every resident can succeed.

About the District and Race

Salt Lake County, the most populous county in Utah, is home to over 1.2 million people and includes the vibrant city of Salt Lake City and numerous suburban and rural communities. The Salt Lake County Council consists of nine members, three representing the county at large, and six representing specific districts. Romero is running to represent District 4, which includes neighborhoods in Emigration Canyon, Holladay, Millcreek, and parts of Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Murray City, Salt Lake City, and South Salt Lake City.
The current District 4 Councilmember, Ann Granato, is stepping down, having endorsed Romero as her successor. His opponents in the race are Republican Roger Livingston, a former district court judge, and Utah Forward Party candidate Nolan Kruse, a small business owner.

Salt Lake County’s demographics are shifting, with nearly 20% of the population identifying as Latino, and District 4’s diversity makes this race a critical opportunity for inclusive leadership.

“Salt Lake County deserves a leader who will work to ensure that every community, every neighborhood, and every resident has a voice,” said Romero. “Together, we can protect our environment, create more affordable housing, and build a strong economy that benefits all of us.”
