Latino Victory Fund Endorses State Senator Nellie Pou for New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District

If elected in November, Pou would be the first Latina to represent New Jersey in Congress.

Washington, D.C.—The Latino Victory Fund announced the endorsement of State Senator Nellie Pou for New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District. If elected, Pou would make history by becoming the first Latina to represent New Jersey in Congress.

Statement from Sindy M. Benavides, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO:

“Senator Pou is a trailblazing leader with a distinguished career spanning over two decades. She has championed policies that uplift and protect our families. Her significant legislative accomplishments include broadening the definition of human trafficking and increasing penalties, enabling undocumented students to pay in-state tuition rates, reforming the juvenile justice system to focus on rehabilitation over punishment, and setting new standards for the care of seniors and people with disabilities. These laws have profoundly impacted countless lives, and reflect her deep understanding of the issues that matter most.

“New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District, a diverse and dynamic community with a significant Latino population, deserves a representative who understands the challenges and is prepared to fight for the needs of all its residents. With 36.8% of the district’s population being foreign-born and a vibrant Latino presence in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties, it is crucial to elect a leader who embodies the spirit of the community. Senator Pou has consistently demonstrated steadfast commitment to the essential values of justice, opportunity, and inclusivity.

“As the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus Chairwoman and a dedicated public servant, Nellie Pou has consistently broken barriers and built bridges among diverse communities. Her leadership is characterized by integrity, empathy, and commitment to social justice. She would make history as the first Latina to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Congress, a milestone that would not only celebrate her exceptional qualifications but also reflect the rich diversity of the district she seeks to serve.

“In the wake of Congressman Bill Pascrell’s passing, we believe that Senator Pou is the leader NJ-09 needs to continue advocating for the community with the same passion and dedication. Senator Pou’s experience, leadership, and vision make her uniquely qualified to represent the 9th District in Congress, and we are confident she will bring the voices of her constituents to the forefront.

“Latino Victory Fund urges all Democrats in New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District to unite to support Senator Nellie Pou. Her candidacy is a call to action for all of us to stand up, be heard, and make history together. By electing Nellie Pou, we will ensure that our values of freedom, opportunity, and fairness continue to guide our nation’s future. Let’s seize this moment to make a difference and elect a leader who embodies the spirit of our community.

“Together, let us lead by example and support Nellie Pou’s historic candidacy for the U.S. Congress.”
