Washington, D.C. – Today the Senate began the confirmation hearings for Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.
See below for a statement from Cristóbal J. Alex, President of Latino Victory Fund:
“In 1986, Republicans in the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the confirmation of Jeff Sessions for a federal judgeship appointment because his racial views were too extreme. Today Republicans in the Senate are looking at the same evidence to determine whether the same applies for today’s GOP.”
“Confirming Jeff Sessions as the next Attorney General of the United States would put our civil rights in danger and would make America unsafe for communities of color. Jeff Sessions supports mass deportation, a Muslim registry, and would roll back progress on LGBTQ rights. Senator Jeff Sessions is unfit to serve as Attorney General; his anti-immigrant and racist views cloud his judgment and make him unable to protect all Americans equally.
“We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to follow the lead of their 1986 predecessors and reject the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. History will judge the members of the Committee by how they vote on this confirmation.”
