WASHINGTON – In response to the U.S. House of Representatives vote to appoint Jim Jordan as Speaker of the House, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Sindy Benavides released the following statement:
“Jim Jordan represents the MAGA extremism that empowered Trump, spun conspiracy theories, and incited the January 6th insurrection. As Jordan aims for the gavel, in the second round of voting, we must remember his record shows us he will do everything in his power to cozy up to far-right factions, stonewall bipartisan efforts, and leave the legislature more polarized than he found it. Jordan’s brand of politics will sow a deep division within the lower chamber—the very branch of government the founders envisioned to represent the people of this nation—all while creating a more destructive and dangerous reality for Latinos and marginalized communities. Jordan has been vocal about his hard-lined immigration policies penalizing families and children fleeing violence, sought to ban same-sex marriage, and staunchly opposes reproductive rights. The test for a Speaker of the House is someone who puts the American people above extremist politics – and, as we just saw, Jim Jordan just doesn’t pass.”
