Following State Representative Brenda Lopez Romero’s announcement to run for Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, Latino Victory Fund Interim President Melissa Mark-Viverito issued the following statement:
“State Representative Brenda Lopez Romero is a step closer to breaking yet another glass ceiling as she embarks to become the first Latina to represent Georgia in the United States Congress. We purposely drafted Brenda Lopez Romero because we know that she is the best candidate that will galvanize a diverse coalition of voters and flip Georgia’s 7th Congressional District from red to blue. Brenda will keep fighting to make things better for Georgians, and that includes making healthcare more affordable, supporting small business owners, improving public education and fixing our broken immigration system. Her voice and leadership is exactly what Georgians desperately need in Washington. ”
Despite its changing demographics, Georgia has never sent a Latino/a to the United States Congress. Like the rest of the nation, Georgia’s 7th Congressional District is becoming more diverse. Latinos, Asian and Black voters will play an important role in determining who the Democratic nominee will be, but more importantly, the Democratic candidate will need to galvanize those communities in the general election to defeat the Republican challenger. That’s why Latino Victory Fund launched “RunBrendaRun.com” — a digital draft campaign to encourage the first Latina elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, Brenda Lopez Romero, to run for this seat.
