Washington, D.C. —Today Latino Victory Fund President Cristóbal Alex urged Latinos in Chicago to vote early and ensure their voices are heard in the city’s runoff elections. Early voting ends Sunday April 4 for the contest between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Latino Victory Fund endorsed challenger Jesús “Chuy” García, as well as in 18 aldermanic runoffs.
“This mayoral race is one of the most important local races across our nation. Early voting is an easy and accessible way for our community to ensure the power of our collective voice is heard,” Alex said. “That’s why it’s more important than ever to remind your friends and family about early voting and the importance of standing up for Latinos across Chicago.”
The Chicago metropolitan area is home to over 1.9 million Latinos, giving the area the fifth highest Latino population in the country, a 2013 Pew Report found.
“Plan to vote early so that you are sure you have time to do it no matter the weather, if you get sick, or you can’t miss work. Vote early to make sure your voice is heard,” said Alex.
Chicago voters can register and vote at the same time during early vote. According to the Chicago Board of Elections, voters may now cast ballots at 51 locations in Chicago—one in each of the 50 wards and one at the Board of Elections office located at 69 W. Washington St. downtown.
All early voting sites are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, until April 4th. Early-voters are required to provide a government-issued photo ID at the polls; however, for regular voting on April 7th, registered voters do not need to provide an ID.
