Latino Victory Fund: Secretary Castro Led a Bold, Transformative Campaign and Leaves a Profound Imprint in the 2020 Election

Washington, D.C. — Today, Secretary Julián Castro announced the suspension of his presidential campaign. Latino Victory Fund Executive Director Mayra Macías issued the following statement:

“Secretary Julián Castro quickly became the conscience of the 2020 presidential race. He led a bold, transformative campaign that has left a profound imprint in the 2020 election. Julián led his candidacy with compassion and the interests of hardworking people at heart. He became the first candidate to propose an immigration plan, a police reform proposal, and a plan for First Nations.  He started a critical dialogue about the Democratic primary process and the challenges that many candidates of color face because of it. Our country’s demographics are changing and becoming more diverse, and we must ensure that our diverse electorate is represented in the 2020 election.

“Julián became the voice of the most vulnerable communities in our nation–the ones who need someone to speak up for them during these trying times of hatred and attacks fueled by racism.  He demonstrated the resolve we clamor for in a fierce leader who doesn’t shy away from compassion. If we learned one thing from Julián, it’s that he will continue fighting for our country. Although this wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for, Latino Victory was privileged to have counted Julián as part of its familia since day one, and we look forward to continuing to work by his side in his next endeavor.

“Finally, to his dedicated staff, we want to extend our deepest gratitude for their dedication and hard work. To Julián, we want to say: Gracias y adelante.”
