Washington, D.C.—Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Katharine Pichardo released the following statement following reports that ICE agents attempted to enter Hamline Elementary School in Chicago:
“This report is deeply disturbing and sends a chilling message to immigrant communities in general, and Latino communities in particular, that there is no safety. Our schools must be a space for children to learn, not places of fear. The last thing we need is for parents to keep children from receiving an education because they are afraid. This is not what people voted for—and no human being deserves to live like this. We are just one week into the Trump administration, and already, we are seeing the dangerous effects of his extreme policies and anti-immigrant rhetoric. They’re emboldening an extremist agenda that diminishes our communities’ safety—and now, our children’s. Schools, hospitals, churches and domestic violence shelters are no places for ICE raids. We urge all Americans to stand up against these extreme and dangerous policies, and do everything in their power to protect vulnerable communities.”
