Latino Victory Fund Statement on Senate Finance Committee Split Vote on AG Xavier Becerra’s HHS Secretary Confirmation

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Senate Finance committee split its vote on Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s Health and Human Services Department secretary’s confirmation. Becerra’s confirmation will now be considered by the full Senate.  Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Nathalie Rayes issued the following statement:

“Attorney General Becerra has the experience and public service record required to lead the Health and Human Services Department. We’re facing a critical point in the Covid-19 pandemic that necessitates all hands on deck in the Biden administration’s response team, especially HHS. Having an HHS secretary like Becerra, who has long advocated for affordable health care access and underserved communities’ rights, will help save countless lives. Becerra brings a trove of managerial and health care policy expertise that will prove invaluable in HHS’s mission to steer our country out of the pandemic.  Latino Victory urges Senate Republicans to put the American people’s well-being over politics and work with Democrats to confirm Becerra as swiftly as possible.”

A long-time supporter of Xavier Becerra, Latino Victory Fund recommended him to the Biden transition team and supported his nomination publicly since it was announced on December 6, 2020. The organization mounted a campaign to call on Senate Republicans to give a fair and swift confirmation process to the Latino nominees, including Becerra. The campaign included public support statements and a press conference call led by the Proyecto20% coalition, comprised of Latino Victory and other top national Latino organizations.
