Washington, D.C. — As the Supreme Court wraps up the hearing on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Latino Victory Fund Executive Director Mayra Macías issued the following statement:
“For more than seven years, DACA has proven time and time again its lawfulness and effectiveness. This program has enabled over 800,000 Dreamers to come out of the shadows and to contribute to the only country that they know and love. DACA has proven to grow our economy and make our communities safer.
“President Trump and Congressional Republicans are nothing but heartless and apathetic when it comes to protecting Dreamers. The party of Trump appears to have no interest in forging solutions that benefit every American, including those in our hardworking immigrant communities. It’s been months since House Democrats passed the American Dream and Promise Act, which would have brought relief to Dreamers; however, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell continues blocking this bipartisan bill from going to the Senate floor.
“The callousness we’re seeing from President Trump and Congressional Republicans is shameful. We are optimistic that the Supreme Court will do the right thing and uphold DACA, but we cannot just rely on courts to do what’s right by our community. There’s a lot at stake in 2020–that’s why we must do everything in our power to vote out those who continue to dehumanize immigrants and Latinos and elect representatives who will protect DREAMers, stop family separations and fix our broken immigration system once and for all.”
