Washington, D.C.— On the 51st Anniversary of the now-overturned Roe v. Wade, Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Sindy M. Benavides issued the following statement:
“Roe v. Wade guaranteed women the right to have agency over their bodies, their health, and their lives. It safeguarded the basic human right of bodily autonomy and the right to make life-saving health care decisions. When the right-wing majority Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Republicans in GOP-majority states declared open season on women’s reproductive health and passed abortion bans that put women’s lives at risk. Republicans’ assault on reproductive health will have a devastating impact on Latinas —six million Latinas live in the 26 states where abortions are banned or are facing bans and half are economically insecure, putting their lives in danger even more.
“Roe v. Wade’s reversal was a setback for women’s rights, but the fight’s not over. We cannot let this country turn into a fascist, right-wing autocracy where women are second-class citizens—we must overturn the GOP in this high-stakes election. Latino Victory Fund stands with its partners in the reproductive space who are in the trenches in the fight for reproductive rights, and will double-down our efforts to elect more Latinas and Latinos who will protect reproductive freedom.”
