Washington, DC – In a piece published in Politico today, several progressive organizations decided to target one of our top Latino champions.
Cristóbal Alex, President of Latino Victory Fund, released the following statement:
“Julián is a progressive Latino leader with an outstanding record of fighting for our community and for working families throughout his entire career. As Mayor of San Antonio, Julián delivered access to pre-k education for every child, and passed an LGBT non-discrimination city ordinance. During his time as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Sec. Castro has implemented reforms that keep Wall Street accountable for improper mortgage lending practices, and he continues pushing for fair and equal access to housing for all.”
“Secretary Castro is a proven Latino leader who advanced progressive policies long before being progressive was politically expedient. These attacks against Secretary Castro are completely unfounded, short sighted, and only serve to pit us against each other. These groups should be ashamed of targeting one of our own who has devoted his life to standing up for our community and for those in need. Secretary Castro would make a fantastic vice presidential pick, who would break another glass ceiling and bring a much needed diverse voice to the highest level of the Executive branch.”
New York City Council Speaker and Latino Victory Fund Co-Chair Melissa Mark-Viverito released the following statement:
“From his time as Mayor of San Antonio to his service as Secretary of HUD, Julián Castro has been a proud and proven progressive. Secretary Castro has an impressive track record of results including extending housing protections to those with criminal records, vastly expanding housing opportunities for low-income families and taking a strong stand to support the LGBT community. Instead of attempting to tear down the career of one of our nation’s most prominent Democratic Latino leaders, Democrats and Progressives should be uniting to make sure Donald Trump’s Republican Party stays out of the White House.”
