Washington, D.C. – As the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions’ confirmation hearing for the Health and Human Services secretary concluded, Latino Victory Fund urges the committee to support nominee Attorney Xavier Becerra. Latino Victory Fund President & CEO Nathalie Rayes issued the following statement:
“Attorney General Xavier Becerra is an experienced public official, a champion for health care access, and a staunch advocate for civil rights and equality. Our health care system needs leaders like Becerra who understand the intersection between racial and economic equality and health care access. As the son of working-class Mexican immigrants, Becerra has first-hand knowledge of the health care disparities faced by millions of Americans and a genuine commitment to eradicating them. We’re in a critical moment in the worst public health care crisis in recent history that is disproportionately affecting communities of color, especially Latinos. The Senate must approach Becerra’s nomination, not as a political maneuver but a decision that can save lives. We urge the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to support Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s nomination and ensure he has a fair and swift confirmation.”
A long-time supporter of Xavier Becerra, Latino Victory Fund recommended him to the Biden transition team and supported his nomination publicly since it was announced on December 6, 2020. The organization mounted a campaign to call on Senate Republicans to give a fair and swift confirmation process to the Latino nominees, including Becerra. The campaign included public support statements and a press conference call led by the Proyecto20% coalition, comprised of Latino Victory and other top national Latino organizations.
