Eva Longoria, Henry R. Munoz III and other Latino influentials lead effort to mobilize a new generation of leaders
Washington, D.C. – Today, Latino Victory Project launched an online grassroots mobilization effort focused on celebrating the achievements and influence of Latinos accomplishing great things across the country. The Firsts Campaign aims to celebrate Latinos who were the first members of their families to accomplish milestones like graduating high school or college, or opening their own businesses, giving a voice to these influential community members. These first achievements will ultimately add up to bigger victories for the community.
“I am inspired every day by our community as we constantly dare to dream big. I’m talking about those who become the first in their family to achieve milestones – whether they’re the first to graduate from college, own a home, or vote on Election Day,” said Latino Victory Project co-founder and actress Eva Longoria. “The Firsts Campaign is about celebrating everyday victories in our community that are integral to the future of the nation.”
Latino Victory Project co-founders Eva Longoria and Henry R. Munoz III are among some of the first participants to share their stories and vision for the political future of the Latino community.
“I come from a family of firsts. My father was the first labor leader in Texas history to organize migrant farm workers to secure a livable minimum wage,” said Henry R. Munoz III, Latino Victory Project co-founder and Democratic National Committee finance chairman. “Inspired by the success of my father’s achievements and hard work, I am the first minority to serve as finance chairman of a major political party and I was the first minority member of the Texas Transportation Commission. We need to make sure that the Latino community has the political power for many more firsts’ voices to be heard across the country.”
“So far in this election cycle, we have seen an unbelievable amount of negativity about our community and a litany of hostile policies,” said Latino Victory Project president Cristóbal J. Alex. “This campaign is designed to celebrate the considerable contributions that the people in our community make every day, and remind young people that their story matters. When we use our vote as our voice, candidates that reflect Latino values, which are American values, will win.”
Several reports and data released this year indicate that the political influence of the Latino community has grown exponentially and that they will be the deciding demographic in this year’s presidential election. The Firsts Campaign will not only empower Latinos to make their voices heard but will also allow politicians to address the issues that affect Latinos among their constituency.
