Latino Victory Project Condemns Passage of Bill Targeting Syrian Refugees

Washington, DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed–in a bipartisan vote–a bill that unfairly targets Syrian and Iraqi refugees fleeing violence by increasing the roadblocks they must overcome before seeking refuge in the United States.

Cristóbal J. Alex, President of Latino Victory Project released the following statement:

“We are a nation of immigrants that shouldn’t look at nationality or religion when making decisions about who to allow into our country. We’re disappointed in the passage of the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act, which sends a message of intolerance, prejudice and exclusion.

“The United States has always been a beacon of light and hope to immigrants from all over the world escaping violence, religious persecution, oppression and fear. Unfortunately, instead of embracing Syrian refugees seeking a safe and welcoming place for themselves and their families, we continue allowing fear and hate to guide our policies and response to the tragic terrorist attacks in Paris.

“Instead of demonizing yet another group of immigrants, we should show compassion, humanity, and open our arms to those seeking a safe haven – no matter where they come from. After all, those are the values that our country was founded upon.”
