Latino Victory Project: Today the Republican Party Failed the American Education System

Washington, D.C. – Cristóbal J. Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project, issued the following statement after the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as education secretary:

“Today, fifty Republican senators failed the American people. These Republicans ignored thousands of people who called and rallied outside of their offices asking them to put the interests of our students ahead of their party. Voters will not forget that almost every single Republican senator voted for a billionaire who has spent her entire career and millions of dollars trying to privatize and defund public education. We will remember these senators’ names on Election Day: especially the ones who are up for re-election.

“Betsy DeVos is, without a doubt, one of the most unqualified candidates nominated to lead the Department of Education. For the first time in the history of our country, a vice president has had to resolve a tie for a cabinet member’s confirmation. Now is the time to cultivate the progressive champions who will run for local school boards across the country, especially in the Latino community. This fight is just beginning and we will not go quietly.”
