Latino Victory Project Urges Bipartisan Action, Not Extremism, on House Action for Immigration Reform

(Washington D.C) – Today in response to President Obama’s executive action on immigration, the Republican controlled House voted 219-197-3 to undo the President’s recent executive actions to protect millions of immigrant families and DREAMers who are benefitting from the new order.

Introduced by Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL), H.R. 5759 seeks to circumvent the recent executive action as well as the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) that have and will continue to allow millions to come out of the shadows and apply for legal status and work permits. The vote is a symbolic gesture of members in the Republican controlled House who are willing to subject tens of thousands of immigrant families to deportation.

“We are saddened that the Republican controlled House voted to pass a bill that is exactly the wrong approach to fixing our broken immigration system,” said Cristóbal Alex, President of the Latino Victory Project. “It is a reckless attempt to break up families instead of bringing people out of the shadows. Members of the House of Representatives should instead be working in a bipartisan way to pass comprehensive immigration reform, and House Republican Leadership should bring H.R. 15, the House version of the already passed bipartisan Senate bill, S. 744, to the floor for a vote.”
