Marco Rubio Can’t be Trusted to do What’s Right for Florida

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from César J. Blanco, Latino Victory Fund interim director, in response to Marco Rubio’s announcement that he will be running for reelection to the U.S. Senate:

“Floridians already spoke and made it clear that they don’t want Marco Rubio in office. During his time in the Senate, Rubio put special interests ahead of the well- being of his constituents and of the Latino community. And when we needed him to stand up to Trump and other anti-immigrant and xenophobic Republicans, he was nowhere to be found. Now Rubio says that he will stand up to Trump, but we know better than to believe anything he says.

“Rubio continues to prove that all he cares about is his own political career, and that he’ll flip-flop to whatever is politically expedient and will get him elected, regardless of the consequences for his constituents. Latinos won’t forget that Rubio voted against giving Puerto Rico the chance to restructure the debt, that he backed away from his own immigration bill, vowed to end DACA and criminalize DREAMers if he was elected to the White House, that he voted against banning people who are on the FBI’s no-fly list from purchasing a firearm, and that he chose to stand with corporations instead of supporting financial reforms that would put more money in the pocket of hardworking Americans.

“Just like Floridians didn’t trust him to do what’s best for them in the White House, they know they can’t trust him to do what’s best for them in the Senate. Floridians don’t need an opportunistic flip flopper in the Senate, they need someone who will fight for them and put their well being ahead of his own. Sadly, Rubio can’t be trusted to do that.”
