“Shortsighted and Dangerous”: Latino Victory Project Statement on Trump’s Executive Order to Dismantle the Education Department

Washington, D.C.—Latino Victory Project President & CEO Katharine Pichardo-Erskine issued a statement following the news of Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Department of Education:

“Make no mistake—eliminating the Education Department and pulling funding from its programs will have devastating consequences that will reverberate for generations, causing irreparable damage to our social fabric and economy. The impact will be felt by the 50 million students who rely on K-12 education, and it could throw into chaos our federal student grants and loan programs, which give access to higher education for millions of young people who seek economic opportunity.

This effort is part of the 2025 agenda that gives more red meat to Trump’s supporters—at the expense of working families. Once again, Trump is usurping Congressional authority to fund government agencies and jeopardizing hard-fought protections to support low-income schools, special education, and key education research programs, among many other mandated services, including crucial programs that protect students from discrimination.

Eliminating the department will decimate our public schools and endanger the ability of millions of students to learn and lead a successful life while putting teachers’ jobs on the line. Trump’s move is shortsighted and dangerous. We urge Congress to step in and put a stop to Trump’s erratic efforts to dismantle our public education and put the interests and well-being of our students and teachers first.”
