Statement on Trump’s Unsurprisingly Anti-Immigrant First General Election Ad

Washington, DC — This morning, Trump released his first general election ad depicting a dystopian and bleak image of the United States. The ad will run through August 29 in key battleground states like Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, according to Politico, and is steeped in anti-immigrant rhetoric and imagery. The ad even cites Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), which has been labeled an “anti-immigrant nativist” organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center. César Blanco, Latino Victory interim director, issued the following statement:

“Trump’s latest ad is tired and totally unsurprising, full of recycled outdated nativist talking points borrowed from GOP Governor Pete Wilson’s playbook and infamous ad in the 1990s. Trump’s ad, once again, proves that The Donald will never change; he is dangerous for our country and for our community, and he will continue demonizing and attacking us all the way to election day. No matter how many times the GOP says Trump will pivot, or how many campaigns the RNC runs to appeal to the Hispanic community, Trump will be Trump, and Latinos won’t be fooled by his lies and fear tactics. Trump’s policies won’t make America safe, and immigrants and refugees are not the enemy. Our country is better than this, and Latinos will keep fighting until November and beyond to make sure Trump and anyone who supports him and feels emboldened by him knows that we will not tolerate their hate, and that they have no place representing our communities.”
