Latino voters turned out to send a record-breaking Latino delegation to Congress, and House GOP is blocking history from being made
Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory Fund, the nation’s largest political action committee dedicated to building Latino political power, released the following statement after Republicans’ total failure to elect a new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Today was supposed to be a historic day, with the 118th Congress being the most diverse Congress to be sworn in. A historic number of Latinos were supposed to be sworn in, including barrier-breaking Latino “firsts” such as the first Gen Z and the first immigrant LGBTQ members of Congress,” said Nathalie Rayes, President and CEO of Latino Victory Fund.
“House Republicans are playing politics and blocking history from being made. What we’ve seen on the House floor is more evidence that Republicans do not care about governing and a grim foreshadowing to the American people about how they’ll run the House in the next two years. In the 2022 midterm elections, Latino voters turned out to send a record-breaking Latino delegation to Congress. Now, Republicans are disregarding the will of the people and disrespecting Latino candidates as they continue to block the process to allow these members to be sworn in to office.”
