Washington, D.C. — After weeks of uncertainty over adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census, President Trump announced that he is finally backing down from his obsession to include the question in the form. The Supreme Court handed Trump a massive defeat when they ruled to block the racist question. Melissa Mark-Viverito, Latino Victory Project interim president, issued the following statement in response:
“This is a resounding victory, not only for communities of color and immigrants but for all of us who still believe in our democratic system. Trump’s dogged attempt to include the citizenship question was a disgusting ploy to silence and suppress true representation in our government. His persistence and obsession over this ought to serve as a reminder that he’s incapable of governing, and that he will use every opportunity he can to inflict harm on the immigrant and Latino communities. Now that we’ve won this battle, we must ensure that we maximize our communities’ participation in the census to ensure that everyone is counted.”
